Food Security:
The major objective of ANTODAYA is to reduce the food stress faced by the
poverty-ridden tribal and dalit community of the area. There were many
starvation-related deaths prior to the intervention of the organization. It was
a challenge for the organization to tackle such a major issue with its limited
resources. But the organization was able to do substantial work on the
livelihood issues and tried hard to facilitate access of people to Government
social welfare schemes. It not only linked many people with the Government
programs in the project area but also managed to awake the slackening
government agencies by organizing right to food campaign. Two public hearings
showing the performance of government welfare programs was attended by noted
economists of Delhi school of economics as well as the villagers in large
numbers. The move was also well received by media and now it has gained the
form of a organized movement of civil society comprising NGOs, lawyers,
academicians and concerned citizens of the area. ANTODAYA has followed up the
issue by publishing a simple booklet containing information on various
Government programs. In addition to the above interventions ANTODAYA has
motivated the target community to establish the grain banks in every village to
face the scarcity. Later on the Tribal welfare department of Government of
Orissa has contributed grains to 36 villages (900 HHs). All the villages now
have grains to supplement their food stress for a period of 15 to 20 days.
Based upon this experience NABARD has sanctioned one Pilot project of SHG Grain
Bank linkage programme for 307 households of remotest GP of Kerpai, to be
implemented through ANTODAYA.
